Jeep Patriot Diesel Particulate Filter DPF (2006-2017)

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on the Jeep Patriot 2.0 CRD is an essential exhaust emission control device designed to trap and reduce harmful soot and particulate matter from the engine's exhaust gases. It is situated after the catalytic converter and before the exhaust pipe silencer and functions in two main phases to capture and burn off soot particles.

The DPF consists of a ceramic body with numerous microscopic parallel channels — around 50 per cm² — arranged like a honeycomb. These channels are made of cordierite or silicon carbide, enclosed in an inox stainless steel housing. Alternate channels are blocked at their entry or exit to force exhaust gases to pass through the porous walls, trapping particulates inside.

The DPF operates in two main phases:

• Filtration Phase: Captures fine soot and ash particles within the exhaust gas, trapping up to 99% of particulates.
• Regeneration Phase: Burns off the accumulated soot by raising exhaust temperatures, cleaning the filter to restore efficiency.

There are two types of DPF regeneration:

• Passive Regeneration: Happens automatically at low engine loads when exhaust temperature is sufficient to burn off soot.
• Active Regeneration: Controlled by the engine ECU and involves stopping the EGR valve, activating post-injection, and managing turbo output to increase exhaust temperature, burning soot roughly every 500 to 700 miles for 5 to 15 minutes.

Active regeneration converts soot into carbon dioxide, water vapour, and ash.

The DPF captures potentially carcinogenic and highly polluting particulate matter from diesel exhaust. It has been mandatory on diesel vehicles in the European market since January 1, 2011, to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality.

Common indicators of DPF issues include:

• DPF warning light illuminated on the dashboard
• Loss of engine power or performance
• Visible black smoke from the exhaust
• Engine clogging or fouling

Addressing these signs promptly ensures engine efficiency and emission compliance.

To extend your DPF's life, it is recommended to:

• Drive at highway speeds at over 3,000 RPM at least once a month to trigger regeneration
• Carry out regular decarbonisation treatments
• Use specific DPF cleaning additives directly in the fuel tank
• Perform manual regeneration using diagnostic tools if necessary

These practices help avoid soot accumulation and costly replacements.

DPF replacement is generally rare but becomes essential if the filter is irreversibly clogged or damaged. Removing the DPF is illegal and risks fines or vehicle seizure.
